Are ADAM better than a new time clock and profile?
Critical Reason: Enabling the use of Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) in small retail units (less than 3000 sq ft)
Alliance & Leicester, one of the leading financial services retailers in the UK, wanted to lower the costs associated with maintaining a 220 store high street retail network. The group spend over £1M (and rising) PA on their energy bills, and have no direct way of reducing the annual cost.
Capabilities: Improve on time-clock benefits
To justify the investment required to build the business case, Alliance & Leicester installed ADAM in sites for ‘week on week off’ comparative analysis. All time clocks were assumed to be set correctly, and any savings made throughout the night were deemed to be achievable through management training and development. Any savings had to be generated throughout the day:
- Control: ADAM are controlling Lighting (internal and external.), Heating and Air Conditioning in all retail and administration areas;
- Cost: Average £2K equipment and installation cost
- Metering: Full metering installed in all sites to demonstrate business case
- Time Frame: 1 Day Installation
Result: 1.6 Year Payback
Working with ADAM, Alliance & Leicester have delivered the following business case benefits – generating a 19 month payback:
- 20% Energy Reduction: ADAM have lowered energy consumption across all sites by 20%. The savings have been generated throughout the trading pattern of the stores. Under normal direct store control, the Heating and Air Conditioning plant runs throughout the day. Under ADAM control it comes on to establish the required trading environment, and is then turned off. There is minimal impact on the inside temperature of the store.
Better than a time clock: By setting strict success criteria, Alliance & Leicester were able to build a strong business case comparing ADAM control against a ‘well run’ retail unit.
